The SDP management capabilities enable Operations staff to view end user services, to detect issues affecting those services, to drill down into the issue and isolate the source of the problem. Service providers can dramatically improve mean time to repair, service availability, and improve the SDP manageability.

The challenge

As for every deployed solution, the management of it is a critical point for service insurance and customer satisfaction. For telcos it is also a guaranty not to lose incomes. With IMS the management is facing a challenge as based on new protocols, new components and by moving from switching traffic to the all-IP Eden. IMS also comes with promises of an El Dorado of new services which creation is eased by the Service Delivery Platform (SDP). The SDP management, another challenge, is likely to help go further than the fault management of the IMS infrastructure and will add a service performance manageability.

The CME Solution Center has gained experience and made actual the implementation of an IMS-SDP environment. On top of this architecture are running several demos used to prove HP ability to handle the IMS-SDP environment. Now the need comes to extend the scope to the full operators’ ecosystem including OSS to ensure service quality management.

Solution overview

The initial focus to demonstrate SDP management capabilities is the service assurance functional area for the SDP environment. As ISM maximizes the use of OpenView assets, the HP OpenView OSS portfolio is used to demonstrate service assurance capabilities by monitoring the service delivery environment. Moving forward, the goal is also to further refine what capabilities will be exposed to the network management layer. As a longer term objective, the service management layer specific SDP requirements will also be looked into.

Several demos scenarios based on use cases have been set up. They cover service assurance scenarios such as SDP internal events affecting end user services, SDP performance issues affecting end user experience, SDP performance metrics passing certain thresholds alerting Operations staff of SDP capacity shortage and alike. They also cover issues in the interaction between IMS-core elements and the SDP that affecting end user services.
