The Video Server Reference Deployment Architecture is to be considered as rational model handling inputs from different perspectives to provide with the most adapted deployment architecture for successful IPTV services, from the first service launch all along the IPTV roadmap to the full deployment.

The challenge

A simple video delivery implementation starts with a single video server that serves a few users and then quickly evolves to multiple servers clusters that serve hundreds of thousands of users. Moreover, thousands of video assets have to be efficiently and cost-effectively stored, replicated and distributed geographically to satisfy consumer’s demand.

A proper definition of this video delivery implementation is important as it directly impacts:

  • The quality of the Video services
  • The nature and scope of the video services
  • The scalability of the IPTV services (in terms of reachable geographies and sustained subscribers’ densities)
  • A non negligible part of the IPTV solution CAPEX & OPEX.

Solution overview and benefits

The Video Server Reference Deployment Architecture provides modeling recommendations on the hardware platforms, the storage and the deployment topologies by taking into consideration the business perspective requirement, the services perspective requirement and the roadmaps (business & services) requirements.

This model provides all relevant inputs for IPTV capacity planning (related to the delivery layer) and focuses on recommended architectures based on type of deployment (i.e., centralized video servers vs. decentralized), optimized server configurations based on architecture, scalability & performance of video servers. Finally, the model’s outputs should help to get a correct view of the Total Cost of Ownership of IPTV deployment.

By using reference architecture for the deployment of the Video servers, the IPTV system integrators and/or the IPTV operators will benefit from a rational model that will drive the deployment of the delivery layer.

Scope of the solution

The Video Server Reference Deployment Architecture addresses the following topics:
  • The Video Server functional definition
  • The Video Server performance analysis
  • The Video Server Scalability & Resiliency analysis
  • The Video Server reference deployment architecture use cases highlighting the IPTV Services requirement
  • The Video Server integration needs within an IPTV framework
  • The Video Server solutions.
